Some non-holiday events this weekend

Hi there! It's been a couple of weeks since I blogged about any events. I've had a devil of a time trying to find non-holiday events going on throughout the state! But thanks to some great folks who emailed me, I've got a few things to tell you about. Sorry for the delay as these events are starting today!

Mint Gallery in Atlanta is their 2nd Vintage Trunk Show and it sounds like a lot of fun. According to their website they have vintage (and some not vintage) clothes, shoes, hats, jewelry and what not for sale. There will also be refreshments and live entertainment. Alcove Arts Gallery in the Oakhurst area of Decatur is having "Spacemas". As described on the website as "retro furniture, fixture and function" by a bevy of artists. There will be a number of musical acts performing as well. The event runs from 3pm to midnight today, Saturday, 12/5. For more information visit Alcove's website at alcovearts.com

Historic Madison is hosting their annual winter Holiday Tour of Homes this weekend through Sunday, 12/6. There are six distinctive homes available for tour during the day or by candlelight. For more information on the tours, visit the city of Madison's Visitor website at www.madisonga.org

The 23rd Annual Marietta Pilgrimage is also happening this weekend, 12/5-12/6. Day and candlelight tours of Marietta historic homes are available with historic public building tours available during the day only. For more information, visit the Pilgrimage's website at www.mariettapilgrimage.com

70 Years of Gone With the Wind

The Marietta Gone With the Wind Museum is hosting a big 70 year celebration "Re-Premiere" event this weekend. The event starts on Friday, November 13th, with Gone With the Wind authors and cast members Q&A at The Strand Theater on the Marietta Square. Later in the day there will be the "world's largest Virgina Reel" performed by 70 costumed couples at Glover Park on the Marietta Square. Friday events conclude with a "Belles and Beaus" costume ball. Saturday, November 18th, events include autograph signings, a vintage car parade, a special appearance by TCM's Robert Osborne, and the "re-premiere" of the film Gone With the Wind, and other events. Sounds like a big celebration! Year Round Ghost Tours

If you didn't get around to taking in a ghost tour before Halloween, don't fret! Many of the ghost tour companies in the metro Atlanta area offer the opportunity to tour local haunts year round! One of these companies is Ghost of Marietta who offer several different tours including a "Spirits and Spirits" tour which includes ghost stories with a glass of wine at the Marietta Wine Market followed by a walking tour. Also check out Decatur Ghost Tour and Roswell Ghost Tour . They offer year round tours as well. Check their websites for a schedule of available tours and to make reservations.

Art in the Park

Each Labor Day weekend the Marietta Square host the "Art in the Park" festival. The 23 year old celebration begins this Saturday, September 5th and goes through Monday, September 7th. It is a huge art festival with over 130 artist in painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry and more. There is also an interactive Art Alley where young and old can create take home art for free! Free admission. For more information visit their website at mariettaartinthepark.com.

Do The Time Warp

The Earl Smith Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square is hosting a midnight showing of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show tonight, Saturday, August 22. The event features a costume contest and prizes. Outside props are not allowed, but prop bags will be available for $2. Doors open at 11pm and the costume contest begins at 11:30pm. Full bar service will be available. Tickets are $6 for students/seniors and $7 for adults. Free parking is available at the Cobb County parking garage (next door to The Strand, between Cherokee and Waddell Streets).

You can add even more excitement to your night by taking in a ghost tour before the movie! Ghosts of Marietta is offering a combination movie ticket and ghost tour for $12. Girls Night at the Movies

Here's a great idea for a girlfriend get-together! This Friday, August 21st at 7pm, the newly renovated historic Earl Smith Strand Theater on the Historic Marietta Square is offering "Flicks, Chicks and Chocolate"! For $15 you get to see the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" followed by a dessert reception with a cocktail of your choice on the rooftop terrace overlooking the square! Too soon to get scared?

Not according to the folks at Ghosts of Marietta! You don't have to wait until fall to enjoy a ghost tour. Ghosts of Marietta are conducting walking ghost tours and an overnight investigation this month! They have also put a fun spin on the walking ghost tour by teaming up with The Historic Marietta Trolley Company for a trolley ghost tour appropriately named the "Scary-etta Ghost Tour" beginning this Friday, August 7th from 8pm to 9:30pm. Space on the trolley is limited so reservations need to be made in advance. $25 + tax for adults and $12 + tax for children. If you miss it this month the next trolley ghost tour is September 4th. First Friday Art Walk in Marietta, GA

The First Friday Art Walk in Marietta, GA is a great idea for a leisurely Friday evening activity. Bring a date or some friends for a stroll through the historic Marietta Square. Spend the evening viewing the works of local artists, enjoying the park, discovering the shops and galleries and take in dinner at one of the many restaurants. The remaining First Friday Art Walks for this year are on August 7th, September 4th and October 2nd from 6pm to 9pm. It's free and is a self-guided tour with maps available at any of the participating venues (look for the Art Walk signs on the doors) or online.
